By any other name...

Strange that needing to sign a Baby Shower card could evoke such emotion. You see, I'm going to be a grandmother and when I was getting ready to sign the card for my future granddaughter's baby shower, I suddenly didn't know what to write.  After all as Moms we all know that we have many names... of course there is Mom, Mommy and Mother, and then there are chef, housekeeper and chauffeur. I'm sure there are also a few names which my kids may have thought of on their own, but didn't share with me, like dictator, snoop and warden.

But now I get to take on yet another name.  My husband didn't have any problem deciding to be called Papa, after all it's what his Dad was called by our kids and all his grandchildren, so seemed the perfect fit.  But me, I'm not fond of those GR names, i.e. Grammie, Grandma, Granny and I had half settled for Nana, but then my nephew and my daughter chimed in and said that sounded way too old...

So I've decided to go with Nonni (pronounced Nawn-e)... I really like that it seems like it will be easy for new little Chloe to say...

So I added another name to my list and as a tear dropped from my eye, I signed my card...  Much Love Forever, Papa and Nonni

whatever the name it is is indeed a huige adjustment....i remember the first time someone called me Mrs. Scarborough, I about died. she was calling em that because I WAS THE MOTHER OF THAT NEWBORN SHE BROUGHT INTO MY HOSPITAL ROOM!!!

We always seem to have names attached to who we really are. as long as we can keep focused on who we are....me being Bill's wife, Holly's mom, Zoë's mom, Abby's mom, Jodie's mom, Daniel's mom, Hazel's Gma and ultimately, ME....we are okay.

In our family, Hazel's mom, (Holly) decided awhile ago that i am Gma and well it kind of stuck and it is as it should be be.

congratulations to Chloe and her  Noni!

Karen - I love this post! And I think Nonni is just perfect - it fits you. You made me think of these women I used to work with who became grandmas at about the same time. One of them wanted to be called "Grandmother" and wouldn't respond to anything else. The other one said she would settle for whatever her grandson called her. Which turned out to be "Oogie."

I love the name. I think it sounds really sweet and gentle and it will be easy to say.  And it isn't too common (at least I haven't heard it before).  When she yells your name in a story 65 people won't all turn around, just you :)
