Breaking free of fast food fixes

I love this idea, which came from Deke's 11-year-old daughter. We don't eat a ton of fast food, but I'm not an anti-drive-through vigilante, either. Years ago when my husband and I both worked nights, fast food was a staple of our diet (it's probably an abuse of the word "diet" to use it to refer to how we ate back then). I was terribly porky and sluggish. My husband, annoyingly, had the metabolism to keep the damage to a minimum. Still, his brother, coming to visit us once, walked in and said, "Joe, put down the fork!" Now, as I mentioned to Deke, we still have the occasional burger or burrito. And I think I enjoy it more, since it's kind of a treat. Also, back in the day, I could demolish a half-dozen donuts, easy. Now we get those once in a blue moon - again, a treat. A few weeks ago I brought some home and with great ceremony presented Nicholas with a chocolate-frosted circle of deliciousness. He picked some off the top and showed no further interest. At which point I was pretty sure this kid isn't actually related to me, at all.
Anyway, many of us are trying to eat better and exercise more. Deke already has turned away free chocolate and hot dogs, which makes him a star in my estimation. "Free" is one of my very favorite words. Followed closely by "chocolate." Hot dogs, not so much.
So I'm cheering Deke on his endeavor and renewing my own commitment. But if someone sends in free donuts - it's gonna get ugly.
