BZZZZZZZZZ Slap
Those pesky mosquitoes are out in full force, even as the kids are headed back to school.
In addition to the irritating sound and annoying itch they bring a serious threat of West Nile Virus infection. This virus, which is transmitted to people by mosquito bites, causes an illness that affects primarily the nervous system. It can be as mild as a headache, fatigue and fever or as serious as an inflammation of the brain leading to serious disability, even death. Young children and the elderly are most vulnerable.
Simple steps you can do to protect you and your family
- Wear long pants and long sleeves when you are outside at dawn and dusk
- Use a recommended mosquito repellent, preferably one that contains DEET (N,N-diethyl-m-toluamide) or Picaridin (KBR 3023)
- Remove standing water that may breed mosquitoes like dog dishes, planter saucers and other outdoor containers
