Car seat confusion
In The Bee, we regularly run items on car seat checks throughout the area. The Modesto Police Department got a grant for these, and working with other agencies, has had a number of events. And every time I see one, I think, "I should get over there." And I don't. I can read a manual, after all, and I knew I had Nicholas' car seat installed correctly. And of course, I was wrong.
Saturday, we went to the grocery store here in Turlock and a check was set up in the parking lot. Really couldn't be easier, or cheaper - it's free - so we stopped by for a look. A good thing we did - turns out, the shoulder harness wasn't tight enough, and we didn't have the back strap hooked in correctly.
I also saw a pile of what looked like older car seats. I asked the officer checking out our car - Oakdale PD's B. Savage, very helpful guy - about it. He told me those were outdated or recalled seats; if you drove in with one of those, they provided you with a new, safe seat free of charge.
Officer Savage mentioned they'll be out again throughout the county next month - watch for a notice in The Bee. Or don't wait and schedule an appointment by contacting the Modesto Police Department at 342-9195, the Turlock Police Department at 668-5550, or the Oakdale Police Department at 845-3511.
