Doesn't everyone need a little parenting help?
Maybe not everyone wants to admit it. But I will. We need to work on some better techniques than what we have in our arsenal currently. So, we signed up for a Love & Logic course through our youngest daughter’s preschool.
We’ve only been through one class and that class was worth the whole $20 investment we made. We learned one phrase that so far seems to be working…I KNOW. Seriously, I know.
This first course dealt with whining and arguing. None of which we experience in the Van Diepen household.
First parents are required to go “brain-dead” when fighting or whining breaks out. You are supposed to pick out a phrase (and they give you several to try) and deliver it with empathy. No reasoning, no threatening, no yelling, just the phrase.
So we got to try it out last night with Abby. Abby was more than ticked when she realized it was Friday night, normally movie night, and we weren’t going to watch a movie because it was late and we had been at our parenting class.
Let the whining and crying begin!
She started with “it’s not fair” and it escalated from there. Doug and I just kept repeating I KNOW each time she threw out another one-liner. And wah-la, it seemed to work after the fourth time. She realized she wasn’t getting anywhere so she just quit.
So far so good, the love and logic seems to be working but I could be premature, it is only day one after all.
