Q: What is diabetes?
A: Diabetes is a chronic medical condition marked by high levels of glucose (sugar) in the blood. Insulin is a hormone needed to move glucose from the blood into the body's cells, where glucose can be used for energy. In diabetes, either the body doesn't make enough insulin or doesn't use it properly, or both. It can occur in children, adults and even in pregnancy. There is also a condition called pre-diabetes which often develops into diabetes.
Q: How common is diabetes?
A: About 24 million people in the United States have diabetes. Of those, 5.7 million are unaware that they have it. It is estimated that 2 in 3 children in California will develop Type 2 diabetes during their lifetime. They will be the first generation to have a shorter lifespan than their parents. Most of these cases are linked to the increasing prevalence of obesity. Pre-diabetes affects 57 million people.
Q: What are the risk factors for diabetes?
A: Risk factors include having a history of pre-diabetes or gestational diabetes, family history of diabetes, high cholesterol or blood pressure, being over the age of 45, obesity, lack of exercise, and ethnic heritage (Hispanic/Latino Americans, non-Hispanic blacks, Asian Americans and Pacific Islanders, American Indians and Alaska Natives).
Q: What are the symptoms of diabetes?
A: Symptoms include frequent urination, unusual thirst, extreme hunger, fatigue, blurred vision, frequent infections, slow wound healing, tingling/numbness in the hands and feet, and occasionally weight loss.
Q: How is diabetes diagnosed?
A: A simple blood test can diagnose diabetes. Normal fasting blood sugar is less than 100. A fasting blood sugar of 100 to 125 is considered to be pre-diabetes, and a value of 126 and above is diabetes. A second confirmation test should be performed before diagnosis. In a non-fasting state, any value over 200 that is accompanied by symptoms is sufficient for a diagnosis.
