To give a DS or not to give a DS?

Crap. My kid wants a DS. I thought we had a few years before requests of this financial magnitude came in.  But like with many things, apparently I was wrong.

I didn't summarily dismiss the idea.  I decided to look into it.  I knew a DS was a  small video game player but they all run together for me.  Doug and I nearly fainted from the sticker shock alone.  $130?  And then the games are at least $20 a piece.  Yikes!

Part of me really wants to make this happen for Abby.  There is something romantic about the notion that you ask Santa for you heart's desire and you get it.  How cool is that?

The other part of me thinks THAT part of me is NUTS.  $130 for one item?  And then you have to get a game for it.  It's a slippery slope.  Wait are those sleighbells I hear?  No, it's the cha-ching of the cash register ringing in my years.

Plus, what does that teach our kids about money?  The economy is in full meltdown mode.  Everyone is tightening their belts, including Ol' Saint Nick.  Should the girls be expecting the world this Christmas?

And as my husband points out we could be setting a standard that we won't be able to meet year after year.  What about the year someone asks for a car?  OK, maybe I'm being dramatic with that one but you get my drift.

So it seems that the cons far outweight the pros.  At least for today.

We bought our 11 year old one last year-you can get them a little cheaper at GameStop used but practically new condition, or Criagslist always has some for sale as well as games.  There are some great educational games-we all play Brain Age-which is a great stimualting game for math, language, etc.  Overall, for us, it was worth it...

Melissa, Oh my gosh I have the same dilema this year. My son wanted a DS so of course my daughter wanted one too. Not to mention their cousins have had one for two years now so of course my kids want one. Last year we put it off because they had other things on their list they wanted more. So I knew this year it would come up again.

My arguement against is same as yours they are $130 and then the games. Also my kids can't keep track of anything small so I know it's just a matter of time before they can't find the case to put it in or they lost a game or they can't find the charger.

Of course I want them to tear open their presents Christmas morning and find exactly what they wanted under the tree, but what happens when the newness of the DS wears off and they don't play with it as much and it gets forgotten? I wouldn't care if I had only spent a little money on it but for $130 they better play with that thing every day for a long long time!

Our final decision is we can't afford it this year and they won't be getting a DS. They will get fewer presents, but they will have a present from Santa and it will be something that was on their list to him, it just won't be the number one item on their list.

So I hear ya......I think back to Christmas's past when all my son asked Santa for was a bell from his sleigh like the kid on Polar Express and all my daughter wanted was a book and markers to draw with. Ahhhh, Those were the days....did I mention that my son has already hinted that for his birthday next year he wants a PSP? Yeah look those up...$249.99!!!!
