Big day in our family - Nicholas is 9 months old today. And my mom is, well, a little older than that. She is spending her birthday watching the baby while my husband and I work. Some people might feel gypped by that - my mom says it's her best birthday present.

I have mentioned before that I was always in awe of my mom and how she always had the answer. But watching her with Nicholas is something else. She will sit on the floor with him for hours, talking back and forth with him and playing with links and stuffed animals. A longtime educator, there is a reason for everything she does, concepts like facial recognition, language development, hand-eye coordination. Me, I just babble.  At chruch, she'll stalk the pastor when it's time for communion, so she can carry Nicholas up for a blessing. Woe unto the other priest, who neglected to issue said blessing one day. And she has the magic touch - she can get that kid to sleep in a heartbeat. I'm looking forward to getting home to my son and my mom today. Knowing her, she'll have him reading college textbooks.
