Raising an infant? Here's some advice on crying from the book "Oh, Baby! Loving (and Surviving!) Your Newborn's First Year" (Hundreds of Heads Books, www.hundredsofheads.com, $14.95), straight from people who've done it:

"You must learn your baby's cries. My first son had a squeaky cry, which meant he wanted to get picked up. He also had a sniffling cry, which meant he was wet. A low, whining cry meant he was sleepy. When I heard that cry, I knew there would be silence in about ten minutes. But the cry that was most important was his cry of hunger. This cry was a loud, angry cry, as if someone has just given him a shot. It took me nearly three months to learn it, but I listened intently, and knowing it came in handy."
