A letter to Nicholas

Dear Nicholas,

You're 10 months old now. And every day we see more of your personality develop. I wonder what you'll be like at 10. Or 20. Or 40. I hope you always have the sense of wonder you have now - you're enchanted by birds, and trucks, and watching Angie chase just about anything. You're pretty laid back, for the most part, unless someone is changing your diaper or you're tired. With luck, you'll outgrow the penchant you have for trying to run around naked from the waist down. I don't think that's going to fly well in elementary school. Or in the business world, for that matter. Your smile lights up a room, and I love the way it starts in your eyes before getting to the rest of your head. You're chatty, and engaging, though it takes you a little while to warm up to new people - I'm okay with that. You love to be outside, you love to spin with Mom and nap on Dad. I hope you always like the outdoors, but there might be a small problem if you're still sleeping on Dad when you're in your 30s. And I hope you never become one of those kids who doesn't want to hug his mother in public.

I like picturing you when you're older, though I'm in no hurry to get there.

One thing: we're all betting on when you're going to be taller than your sisters. I am guessing it'll be about when you're 9. Don't let me down.

Such a sweet message, as my son at 25 years old begins his adventure into parenthood, it was nice to read your letter to Nicholas and to remind me of when he was 10 months and 10 years...thanks for sharing!

So sweet.

I still look at Abby and Maddie and wonder how they will grow up.  Hopefully Abby tones it down a notch and Maddie takes it up a notch.

I laughed last night at Abby because when I look in her eyes I can literally see the wheels turning in her head before she even utters anything.

And I love how Maddie is happy all the time.  Nothing phases her.  She is as cheerful at 6 a.m. as she is at 4 p.m.  I could learn a little something...
