A month into my new life

A little over a month ago, I wrote about changing jobs, going from being an editor in Modesto to a reporter here in Turlock. And I thought I'd write a little update on how it's going.

Best decision I ever made. I really enjoy getting around town and talking to people and writing stories again; I hope people are finding what I'm writing useful and engaging. The interaction with readers through online comments and blogs and even e-mail has been interesting, and a lot more immediate than it used to be in dark ages, when I was a reporter before. I'm getting more confident with the camera and am looking forward to giving video a shot.

There are some things I do miss: Seeing my colleagues, many of whom I consider good friends. Being a part of the "bigger picture" at the paper and the debates over which stories to put on the front page. And the first time I picked up a story to edit and saw another byline under "Bee City Editor" I felt a little pang. Also, it's been an adjustment for Nicholas to realize that sometimes when I'm home I'm not "home" - I am working. One day, my mom was watching him and I came home and snuck into the back room, where I have my desk set up. Didn't tell her I was here because I didn't want Nicholas to know. I was sure she'd hear me out here, think I was an intruder and call the police.

But here's the thing: Yesterday, I finished up work, signed off and walked into the living room, where my boys were watching football. We played and ate pizza and went for a walk and came home and gave Nicholas a bath and then watched some more football. A few weeks ago, I'd have made it home - maybe - for the bath part.

My husband keeps telling me to savor every moment, because it goes so fast. And it really does - hard to believe Nicholas is 16 months old already. What I have now is the most important thing in the world to me - more of those moments to savor.
