New to Modesto
Hi, my name is Sharon. I recently got a divorce after 17 years and moved here to Modesto from the bay area. I am a mother of 3 boys age 19, 16, & 13. My oldest is away at college for the first time. The other two boys are here with me. They had to start 9th and 7th grade in new schools. I'm sure you can imagine that that went over. I am a RN and worked at Children's Hospital Oakland until moving. I've been searching relentlessly to find a new job but haven't had any luck so far.I have a few questions I'm hoping someone can help me with. I need to find a good pediatrician. My son has only one kidney and needs someone good to follow his care. I also need a good dentist & orthodontist. Possibly a good counselor just so they have someone to talk to about the divorce. If anyone has any advice on helping me find a nursing job I think you would be the greatest person around. I'm not a good person for just sitting home. Now that I have done it for almost 5 months I think I am either going to go crazy from boredom & silence or become depressed. (Wow I remember the days I prayed for just a moment of silence and time to myself...now I have way too much of it) What to people do around here? I need to meet some people and have some kind of life. I used to be the treasure of water polo & swimming for the last 5 years. I've been on the board of baseball, a Cub Scout leader, a mom & wife and so much more. Now I still am a mom. I'm pretty much alone and on my own. No family just my one friend here in Modesto. If anyone has any advice on how to meet people or things to do I would be grateful. Lastly I have been single for 2 years I have been thinking about dating how or where do you meet people? Any advice on anything would be greatly appreciated. Please help before I go crazy! Just kidding! Thanks, Sharon

Welcome to the area! I too, am a BAT (Bay Area Transplant), LOL. I can definitely give you the names of a great dentist and a great orthodontist that specialize in kids. We have been going to both for years.
The Dentist is Dr. Toshi Hart (or her colleague Dr. Venn) on Dale Road in Modesto. 543-6937. LOVE them.
The Orthodontist is Dr. Lee Mettler on Coffee Road in Modesto. 521-7642. He and his staff are MAGNIFICENT and his pricing is extremely competitive.
As for the social aspect, I work from home for a company in Mass., so don't "meet" anyone through my job. I spend my free time geocaching with my kids (geocaching.com if you've not heard of it). I've met some really nice people through that hobby over the past 8 months we've been doing it.
I am also into scrapbooking and papercrafting and photography (but I'm 100% amateur on the camera, LOL). I also love to take daytrips and sometimes the kids and I will hop in the car and drive out to one of the CA state caverns and take the tour, or do something else along those lines.

Sounds like you've got a lot going on, and three teenage boys. And a divorce - I've been there, though I didn't have any kids, so it made it much easier. One thing I can help you with is a nephrologist for your son. I see Drs. Skokan and Fahlen at Gould. They're really good. Their number is 550-4765. I like my dentist, too, but he's in Turlock. As far as what people do around here, there are a lot of youth sports - you might check those out; it sounds like your kids are athletically inclined. And it's probably a good way to meet parents. Do you read much? You can go online to the Stanislaus County library and find book clubs there - that's another good way to meet people, and you have a built-in conversation subject. Finally, keep looking about here - there are several women on the site and they're bound to have lots of better advice than I do.

Thanks Patty I will definately check out the doctors you suggest. I wasn't sure if anyone would answer or if people would just think I was strange for asking for all this advice. I had nothing to lose so I tried. I will follow up on your other suggestions. Thanks again. Sharon
