Pomp and circumstance
It's graduation season. And it's a big one for me: last week we watched my stepdaughters get their high school diplomas. Unbelievable.
I also wrote a story about advice for graduates, with readers' contributions and some from famous folks throughout time. It got me to thinking about what I would offer to kids getting out of high school - not that they're listening at that particular moment. I've certainly gotten my share of great advice. My dad told me to always invest in my future, so I've put money into 401Ks and IRAs since my very first job. Even when I made less than $4 an hour - no, really - those little contributions added up and my portfolio is in better shape than my husband's - he didn't start until about 12 years ago.
But I guess if I had something to say it would be this: Find your passion. Follow it. Maybe it'll make you rich. Maybe it won't. But we spend too much time at our jobs for them to be something we don't really love. So there you go, Em, H, Kikimo, Wicky, everyone: Follow your passion and I can guarantee you'll be happy. I did and I am.
