Question of the Week: Resolutions
It's hard to believe that 2009 is only a few days away. Besides being the start of a new year, it is an opportunity to set new goals in your life. What are your resolutions for 2009?

Last year was a awful year and I am ready for a good year! My new year resolutions for 2009 are:
I am going to start eating healthier for my family and me.
I am going to work on get my finances back on track.
Clean and organize my house.
I hate resolutions, they always end up sounding trite or completely unattainable. But I decided to try a standard yet do able resolution just so I could have some thing to work for and some thing I knew I could accomplish. So for 2009 my New Years resolution is to re enroll in school and start working for my degree again.
I hate making resolutions. I always end up eating my words. But this year, I have a list of goals, and I think they are reachable.
No. 1 is get my finances in order. I start my new job on Monday, and that's gonna help a lot.
No. 2 is get back into my size 10 jeans. I've been that size forever, and seems that lately, none of them fit anymore. Maybe my dryer is shrinking them?
Anyway, No. 3 is get organized, of course, especially my ebay room. It's a room that I was gonna make into an office, but instead is a catchall for the stuff that has no home. Photos, craft stuff, gift wrapping stuff, etc. I still have boxes in there that were never unpacked from the move. That was 2 1/2 years ago. *frown*
I am going to try real hard to change the way I deal with stress. My goal is to slow down a bit in life so that I can truly enjoy the things that I am involved with, such as my family. With one child in college, one applying to college, and one who just turned 16, this stress thing may be a bit difficult. "Slow down " is going to be my new motto-you know, slow cooking, slow games like Golf, slow-relaxing knitting, etc. If anyone has any other ideas on how to live a more stress-free life I am totally open to them. Oh, dear. I've got a bunch.
1. Lose the baby weight while the baby is still a baby. 15 pounds to get to immediate pre-baby weight, 25 to get to where I want to be. And overall, be more fit and hit the gym more often.
2. Love the idea of spending more time with my family, especially the newest member. Not so sure how to get there - I am fortunate just to have a job, so I don't want to complain about the hours. Maybe this resolution will be to just make the most of the time I do have.
3. Lose the clutter! In my house, on my desk, everywhere. I think that actually would help with Resolution No. 2.
4. Be an example. This one covers just about all the others - I want Nicholas to see a mom who is happy, fulfilled and fit. And smart about money, and everything else.
Christina - I've read the Stephanie Plum series. Great, snappy, escapist stuff. Along the same lines, you might try Jane Green's stuff. Only replace the New Jersey setting with London.
Although there are plenty of things I SHOULD do, realistically my resolution is to become a reader again.
I was a bookworm when I was growing up. By the time I had two children and started attending college, my required class reading became my only reading aside from magazines.
This past summer I started reading the Stephanie Plum series about a female bounty hunter from New Jersey after my mother in law raved about the Janet Evanovich books. I've enjoyed them - they're hilarious!
In short, I will read from a book daily.
I could go on and on about this.
1. Live healthier. Over the past 8 months, my health has taken a nose dive. I've been making poor eating choices and my fitness has been hit and miss. I need to refocus on this for 2009. I need to get back to the basics that have made me successful in the past...meal planning and daily exercise.
2. Be more organized. I need to do a better job of keeping on top of my To-Do lists.
3. Set a budget goal. Doug and I flirt with budget goals but we never act. We know there is always room for improvment! We challenged ourselves and some friends, starting in January, to set a weekly food budget goal ($125 for a family of 4) that includes any eating out, Starbucks, etc. Also, we are going to sit down and take a hard look at where our dollars are going and work towards paying down our house debt faster. Our plan (to steal from a friend) is to have a "State of the Van Diepens" meeting this week to discuss our goals in depth.
4. Spend more time with friends and family. Although I listed this as number 4, it really is our number 1 goal. We spent some quality time with friends/family around Christmas and it was so wonderful. That really is what life is all about. So I want to do more of that. Just sitting down to a meal and talking is so great, we don't even need to do anything but spend time together.
5. Don't sweat the small stuff. I am a STRESS-CASE so this will be a huge challenge for me.
Hi I read in the Modesto Bee about the "Mom's Ultimate Family Organizer" and I am not sure on how to enter this contest. It says to answer the question of the day to be entered but I am new on here and not sure on how to go about this.
