rain, rain, go away...

She stands by my kitchen window, occasionally pressing her little nose against the glass, and she softly sings:
Rain, rain, go away…
It’s
been raining all week here in our neck of the woods. The kind of rain
storms where one wonders should I be building myself an ark. It’s alot
of rain. A lot of rain with a lot of wind and hail and thunder and
lightening and a lot of rain and a lot of wind. It’s definitely not the
kind of weather to take a 19 month old out in to play. So Hazel has
been pretty much house-bound at her home and here under the Big Top.
She is a little squirrely and stir crazy and definitely ready to go out
into my backyard and swing. But it is raining…a lot.
It’s
raining a lot all over California this past week and we are definitely
not used to it since we have been living in drought conditions for the
last 3 years or so. It’s not as bad as it is down in Southern Cali or
along the coast. But they have their own set of bad issues with the
rain thanks to erosion and the wild fires of the past few summers. No,
we’re just really wet and dealing with minor floodings because our
storm drains are clogged. This kind of wet, rainy, windy weather is
actually supposed to be normal in our neck of the woods. But we seem to
have forgotten that during the drought years. So what is normal isn’t
actually the same old, same old for us around these parts so we are
bitching and moaning and wishing we could go out and play. Hazel is
ready. Mi-ma is too.
Mi-ma needs to get outside and run.
Seriously. I am in training here and this wind and rain is killing me.
Sure I have my gym membership but oh my gawd the gym is freaking
crowded. I have to fight right now for a treadmill or an elliptical.
This isn’t right, I swear. I just want to yell out, “Dude! Get the heck
off that elliptical or that treadmill! I need to train right now for
the Tiarathon!
Don’t you know that this is important?! I just bought myself a tutu to
run in for this event. I’m going to get the chance to meet with
Jillian’s ultimate bitches and fearless leadersShredheads, Kristen and Bill and run with them…okay, run behind them. I’m going to meet and run with Catherine and Gwen and Stephanie and Liz and Erica and my girl, Kari, whom I have ran with before and will soon get to sleep with at the Tiarathon.
Oh
wait. This post isn’t supposed to be about me, or my shredding
bitches. No, it is supposed to be about my poor sweet grand baby girl,
Hazel, who has grown weary of being cooped up indoors because of this
crazy (normal) winter weather in our neck of the woods. Poor little
Hazel is only 19 months old. She’s just a toddler! A toddler who
doesn’t understand why she can’t go outside and swing on the Big Top
swing. Poor, sweet baby!
So I settle down beside Hazel in my
kitchen and look outside the kitchen window, begin to sway to and fro
and quietly sing along with her:

Rain rain, go away
Come again another day
Mi-ma needs to run
And Baby Hazel wants to play!
I
can run at the gym anytime but my sweet grand girl needs to go outside
and play in the Big Top backyard on the swings, and soon.

Try taking her attention to something else. Do things that may interest her (you know your daughter the best) - read, make puzzles, draw, play games, simply build the mother-daughter bond. When kids are outside, they tend to play with friends, so rainy days are your window of opportunity
