Reaching through time with a measuring spoon
I'm not much of a cook. There are a couple of dishes I do pretty well, and one or two standbys I rely on if I'm making dinner for guests. It's too bad, since my mom is a great cook and so was my grandma. And a few years ago I learned that many of my colleagues are very talented in the kitchen; my good and generous friend (and "Man of the House" blogger) Jim Silva set up a schedule of people providing us dinners while I was on bedrest during my pregnancy. I still dream about some of the amazing meals I had during what was otherwise a pretty difficult time.
But back to cooking. My mom has been giving me some of my grandmother's recipes. I love looking through all the cards and scraps of paper covered with her handwriting. And it's prompted me to make some attempts. I made her tortoni, a sort of frozen custard dessert, and biting into it was like stepping back into my childhood. For the Fourth of July, inspired by another colleague who posted an ice cream-churning photo on Facebook, I asked my mom for their ice cream maker. And we did it! It didn't taste as good as my dad's, but I was proud of our efforts.
So I am going through the cookbooks and cards and scraps. And I'm planning. I think I found my Granny's recipe for fudge, which is incomprable. I'll be trying that one soon. And cannoli. And one day, maybe I'll even try my dad's peanut butter enchiladas (which are not as atrocious as they sound). Obviously, it's nothing like having my dad or my Granny back. But, just for a little bit, it makes them feel closer.
I'll take it.
