Refrained from buying the Legos ...

Well, the kiddies may leave the house, but guess what... they still have birthdays!  Gone are the days when it was easy to grab a cart head to Target's toy section and shop away.  My son just turned 25 and since he lives on his own, in a house with 2 buddies, the dilemma begins, what do we buy him for his birthday.  Well, there is always the CASH-O-LA, which he would be delighted with but I like colorful packages, ribbons and bows, even if it's his birthday not mine, I'm paying so ... I'm wrapping!

I was feeling ambitious, so I headed to Target intent on finding something perfect.  And as I headed down the aisles cart in tow, ambition quickly faded to nostalgia as I found myself wandering around the toy department.  Let's see, do you think he'd like a new set of Lego's, oh how many hours he used to spend building the grandest of starships and then setting it on his shelf and guarding it with his little reminders of 'Mommy, just look, don't touch.'  Or perhaps a new bright yellow Tonka dump truck, a modern version of the one he had as a little boy, the one that he would fill with dirt, push across the yard and dump, then fill over and over again, smiling the whole time while he created a masterpiece out of plain old dirt.  I've got it, I know, I know, some new hot wheels.... maybe he'll line them all up just like years ago, park some in his make-believe garage and then decide which one he was going to use to drive his Daddy to work that day.

Well, guess what, my cart was still empty... I decided to embrace the fact he's an adult, celebrate that he is practical, passed on the hot wheels and bought a Visa gift card.  Maybe it would help with some gas for his grown-up, big boy wheels and yep, I wrapped it up in a colorful package and attached ribbons and bows... couldn't resist the self-indulgence!

tears to my eyes! I have moments with my youngest son, 4, that make me think 'oohhh remember when I did this with J.'

Of course when my oldest son reaches 25, I'll have a 15-year-old and a ten-year-old in the house still. I might be buying legos yet- but I'm sure I'll still be nostalgic!
