A Sad Day at the Y

PhotobucketToday, I sadly watched Abby play her last basketball game at the YMCA. About two hours ago the Y closed it's doors in Modesto citing debt as the reason.

Try explaining that to a 6 year-old and a 5 year-old.  No, you won't be playing indoor soccer and no, you won't be playing T-ball.  So much for taking advantage of gymnastics and swimming in the winter.  It's all gone.

Luckily, I was slow to register the kids for indoor soccer.  Many of my friends, after being reassured that all was well did, and that money is long gone, being cashed before they could stop payment.  The Y says they will refund that money when the building sells, but I'll believe it when I see it.

But to me, that isn't even important.  The anger and disappointment that I felt when it first came to light the Y was in trouble has given way to sadness.

I'll miss the Y.  My kids learned how to play sports there thanks to caring volunteers who always celebrated their accomplishments and hugged them when they got hurt.  Doug and I made friends there.  The girls were surrounded by diversity that isn't always found at school and church.

So farewell to the Y.  I hope it comes back.  I pray it comes back.
