The Sugar Police
I'm a big Jackie Warner fan. Probably because she doesn't mince words when it comes to fitness and nutrition -- her new book is called This is Why You're Fat. So I tuned into her new show on Bravo called Thintervention.
You can guess what happens. She takes 8 overweight and out-of-shape people and tries to get them in shape through fitness and nutrition. I love this kind of stuff. I guess that makes me a borderline fitness whack-job.
One of the first things Jackie has everyone do is go through their cupboards, read their labels and dump everything that has more than 5 grams of sugar. Sounds great until you open up your pantry like I did. I've since come to learn that EVERYTHING HAS SUGAR! Everything.
Here's a sampling of what I found in my house:
* Light yogurt - 14 grams
* Spaghetti Sauce - 9 grams
* Pepsi, 1 can - 41 grams - OK, I admit, not shocking but I love me a regular Pepsi now and again.
* Orowheat Whole Wheat Bread, one slice - 4 g - Under the threshold but barely.
* GoGurt - 10 grams - Heartbreaking, this is a STAPLE in my house!
* Rice-A-Roni - 2 grams
* Quaker 90 Calorie Granola Bars - 7 grams
* Nutella, 21 grams - Another HEARTBREAKER.
When I think of sugar, I mostly think of things like cookies, cake, ice cream...not bread, yogurt and spaghetti sauce. I'm a go hard or go home kind of girl so I'd like to do a clean sweep of our house, if only for a couple of weeks and see if our family can live without the mass amounts of sugar we've been consuming. My husband...not so much. He is ok with killing out a few things but he thinks the idea of a "clean" house for a week or two is ridiculous.
So, it's a stalemate as of today -- at least as a family project -- but I think I'm going to give this a try. So far, with the help of Patty Guerra, I've figured out I can have cottage cheese, coffee, Sara Lee Light Wheat Hamburger Buns and water. On yeah, and Rice-A-Roni, or is that breaking another rule?
