the sun shining inside of us
I make no secret of the fact that our family was completed thanks to foster-adoption. I celebrate everyday the joy, love and adventure that our son has brought to us all and everyone he meets. How lucky we all are and all because we were chosen to be Daniel's family.
As time has gone by I have collected a number of books about adoption and families and now that Daniel is at an age where he is genuinely curious as to where babies come from and asking if he didn't grow in my tummy where did he come from, we are beginning to share these books with him more and more during our reading time together.
Last night we read together Phoebe Koehler's The Day We Met You which is a wonderfully written, beautifully illustrated read-aloud book that shares a mother and father's loving description to their son how "The sun shone bright the day we met you." I am touched to read Ms Koehler's words that although she is not a mother by adoption herself, she wrote this book to honor the life of her dear friend's son. "...suddenly the world changes when you holdthat miracle child in your arms. I wrote this book for the miracle baby who changed my friends' lives. I wanted him to know what he did for his parents. I hope that he is proud of who he is. I know that he still shines for them." Ms Koehler's simple, affectionate words create the most beautiful and easy explanation of the adoption experience that young and old would be able to understand. It's definitely recommended reading for any family touched and completed by adoption but I would submit that anyone, everyone should read this book to better understand how wonderful, how amazing, how normal a family created by adoption is.

The day we me our amazing son as his mommy and daddy it felt he was the sun shining inside of us. Everyday it feels like the sun is shining inside of us.
