Tips on Potty Training

TOILET TRAINING YOUR TODDLER Many parents wonder when to begin toilet training their toddler. There is only one right time to start — and that's when your child is ready, physically and emotionally.Readiness has little to do with precise biological age. Most children master toilet training somewhere between the ages of two and four. That's quite a range! While many parents dread toilet training, it need not be a stressful battle of wills. Often problems arise because over-eager parents — feeling social pressures — rush the process before their child is ready. The truth is, toilet training isn't possible until a child is biologically able to control his bladder and bowel. A child must be able to recognize the need to use the bathroom..."hold it" until reaching the toilet...then relax the sphincter muscles at the right time. In between, he must be able to break away from whatever he's doing — no matter how fascinating! — march himself to the bathroom, and wrestle with his clothing. That's quite a bit to ask of a two year old! So, how do you know when your child is ready? She is most likely ready when she can do all of the following: · -Follow instructions · -Recognize when she has to go · -Tell you that she has to go · - Walk to the bathroom · -Pull her pants down and up · -Remain dry for several hours at a time. Here are two more signs that your child is ready: · -She asks to be changed immediately after a diaper is wet or soiled. -She expresses interest in "big kid" underwear. On the other hand, if — like most two year olds — your child is going through a rebellious (No!) phase, it makes sense to wait until that phase has passed. Otherwise, the potty may become the battlefield in your tot's struggle for independence. In addition, don't start toilet training when your child is handling other life changes, such as a new sibling or caregiver or moving to another house or a new environment. Wait until life settles down. Every child is different. The best thing you can do is wait until your toddler is ready. Take your cue from him—he will let you know when the time is right.
