Who is this kid, and what happened to my baby?
It seemed like Nicholas would be attached to his Noo-Noo (that's "pacifier" for anyone who doesn't speak Nick) forever. And it seemed like he'd never be potty-trained. And it seemed like we had all the time in the world before we had to start thinking about preschool.
But all of a sudden there's no Noo-Noo. Mickey Mouse and Toy Story underpants have taken the place of diapers. And as I mentioned before, we signed up for preschool in the fall. All those months I was so frustrated - no kid of mine is going to use a pacifier, nor be in diapers a day past 2 years old - and now I miss those signs of babyhood. Not that I want to change any more diapers, or see my boy walk into high school with a pacifier. But those were about the last vestiges of babyhood. Those parents who offered their children's ages in months far past the time I thought it made sense (about 18 months) always drove me nuts. "How old is your little girl?" "Oh, she's 34 months." Really? How about "almost 3". But now I sort of get it. As much as I like seeing Nicholas grow up, I want to hang on just a little longer to the baby he used to be.
But he's ready to move forward. And as melancholy as I might get, I love seeing him develop into a little person. So for now, I'm going to be content with the fact that he still wants to cuddle with me at bedtime as we read one of his sisters' Disney books for the gazillionth time. That's one little tradition I don't think I'll be able to leave behind. Hopefully, he'll be okay with that. And so will, in turn, his college roommates, spouse and grandchildren.
