Yes there is time!

If there is one thing I've learned after countless years exercising off and on, losing 40 lbs, and training for three marathons, it's that the excuse "there's no time" isn't true.  There is always time to fit in fitness for yourself if you make yourself a priority.

I am reminded of this every Wednesday night and every Saturday morning when I drag myself out to the track at MJC or to the designated Saturday run spot for a Team in Training run.  I roll out of bed (at least on Saturdays) with my hair standing on end, sleepy, puffy eyes and rumpled clothing to run anywhere from 10 miles on up.

And I do it with several other moms, just like me.

Some have kids around the ages of mine, some have babies, some have teens and some are empty-nesters.  And they all find it within themselves to exercise 6 days a week.

We trade war stories about running in the pre-dawn hours and all the crazy stuff we see...people rolling refrigerators down the street and cars driving on the wrong side of the road...crazies yelling up at imaginary friends and people sleeping on park benches.

We talk about hitting the snooze bar and missing a run or having to run after the kids get into bed when the thermometer reads 90 degrees.

And for all the sacrifices we make; getting up at the crack of dawn or hoisting the kids off on dad for an hour; we find ourselves bonding with other women who are making the same priority lists.

So to all the mamas making time to exercise, whether you are training for a race, a Shredhead, or you get out to the gym, my hats off to you.  You are doing a great thing for yourself and teaching your kids a valuable lesson.

I know, I know, I know! That's great advice, but I just can't do it. What I need to do is haul myself out of bed before Nicholas is awake and get to the gym. Because when he's awake, it's just not gonna happen. He goes on runs with me - we both like that - but when it comes time to leave him behind for a weights workout, one look at that little face and I'm sunk. I get way too little time with him as it is, so if it comes to staying a little "puffier" (my friend's grandma's term) for a while and getting in some more block-playing or picture book-reading time with my boy, I'll take the extra pounds. I figure there'll be time for the gym when he doesn't like hanging out with me as much. Can I still call it "baby weight" when he's 11?
